A Pioneering Decade
PPH Programs Move From Pilot to Permanent

– PPH founded as a program of Bergin College of Canine Studies
– Canine Intervention Therapy pilot program rolled out at VA Palo Alto Health Care System, in Menlo Park, California
– The concept expanded to Walter Reed in Washington, DC with the Patient Service-dog Training Program with PPH
– PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury research and treatment mission began at then newly-formed National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), in Bethesda, MD
– PPH established as its own 501c3, separate from Bergin College
– First PPH Training Boot Camp conducted to pair service dogs with impaired Warriors
– PAWS Research Project Final Report conducted by Kaiser Permanente and Dr. Bonnie Bergin is completed; it concluded that PTSD symptoms and depression-related functioning are lower among those PTSD patients with dogs than those without. PTSD patients with service dogs had better overall mental health, less substance abuse, and rated their interpersonal relationships better than those without service dogs.
– New PPH Center opens near Fredericksburg, VA
– New PPH Center opens in Fairbanks, AK near Ft. Wainwright, an active army base, and Eielson Air Force Base.
– New PPH Centers to open in San Antonio, TX and San Diego, CA for a second PPH decade that benefits even more Warriors
