Hello 2023!

 In Events, General, News, Volunteers

2023 is finally here! We would like to start off the New Year with a glance back at the past year with gratitude and excitement. 2022 was full of immense strides and growth organization wide due to the outpouring of support from our communities throughout the nation. From a Service Dog graduation, acquiring  new community partners, to new sites, there is so much to be grateful for. As we reminisce over the past year, we can’t help but look forward to what 2023 has in store!

We would like to take you through a few important highlights of 2022!

Ruther Glen, Virginia

It was a big year for our Ruther Glen, Virginia site! On Veteran’s Day, They were on the Wilkow Majority Radio show, an amazing opportunity to connect with the community. Our Virginia team hosted a Service Dog graduation in October where Antje, Arrillaga, and Hicks were placed in their forever home. We are beyond excited that Hicks and Arrillaga were placed as Service Dogs and Antje was placed as a Facility Dog. We are proud of each dogs’ contributions to the Warrior community and know their placements will allow them to continue to change lives.

Our Virginia site also doubled their staff with the addition of Program Instructors, Sam and Nancy, as well as a new Advancement Associate, Genevieve. Their dog program has grown to nine Service Dogs-in-training with six new pups joining the program this year alone: Phillips, Marianne, Ohana, Orion, Nova, and Nemo.

Our San Diego site is proud to have had Arrillaga graduate as a Service Dog in September! Arrillaga is now placed in Alaska with his forever Warrior and we could not be happier for them both. Our San Diego team also had the honor of partnering with Purina Dog Chow where Carlos & Liberty were nominated for their Service Dog Salute Program. Carlos and Liberty were one of five finalists chosen to help exemplify the impact Service Dogs have for Warriors! Our San Diego crew kicked off the summer by participating in our company wide move-a-thon to ring in 11 years of PPH.

Our San Diego site welcomed four new pups to their dog program: Penny, Michael, LeMay, and Nina as well as a new Advancement Associate, Greg.

Anchorage, Alaska

The Alaska site was selected as one of 5 national sites to participate in the PAWS Act Pilot Program, a historical five year program to implement canine training for Warriors. The PAWS Act is a monumental milestone that will allow the integration of canine training therapy to expand as a treatment and we are extremely proud to be a part of this historical moment. Our Alaska team purchased a new facility vehicle in April and celebrated the one year mark of their new facility in Anchorage in October.

Their site’s Service Dogs-in-training increased with the addition of Elaine, Luana, Paul, and Margaret to their team, allowing them to continue to expand their impact on Warriors.

San Antonio, Texas

Not only is our Anchorage site one of the sites participating in the PAWS Act Pilot Program, but our San Antonio site is another participating location! This makes Paws for Purple Hearts two of the five locations participating in this immense step for expanding the accessibility to canine-assisted therapy for Warriors. We are honored for this opportunity and look forward to the future the program holds.

Our San Antonio team had a busy year with continual community relationship building through events and partnerships. In 2022, they hosted their First Annual Warrior’s Cookout and have moved to a brand new facility! The San Antonio team has welcomed six new puppies to their program: Cavendar, Owen, Linda, Joy, Penn and Moore who have already begun to make an impact on Warriors.

Bay Area, California

Our Menlo Park site developed  into our Bay Area site, allowing us to expand our programs, reaching more Warriors than ever across the Bay Area. Our Bay Area team’s year was full of growth and community relationship building, involving some pretty special partnerships. The San Jose Barracuda hockey team invited them to partner for their Paws and Pucks game, donating all proceeds of puck purchases to PPH. They also invited Service Dog-in-training, Lofty, to drop the puck and featured Ambassador Dog, Schatzie, in their 2023 Cuda calendar. Our Bay Area team has worked on further establishing and increasing their volunteer program and are extremely grateful for all of the support they have received.

This year Oakley joined the team as the newest Service Dog-in-training and Olivia joined as an Advancement Associate.

Detroit, Michigan

We are in awe of how fast our Detroit site has grown since only opening in August! Senior Program Instructor, Emma, and Program Instructor, Holly, have been hard at work connecting with the community and putting down roots. Our Detriot team has welcomed the first four dogs to their training program: Mary, Nelson, Pike, and Lois. The team has already had many great accomplishments, including establishing a Puppy Parent program and connecting with Veterans and Active Duty Service Members since their founding. They are grateful for the overwhelming support they have received and can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store!

Tacoma, Washington

Our Washington team Program Instructor, Cassidy, and Advancement Associate, Claire, have also been hard at work preparing and opening our brand new facility in Lakewood, Washington. Since the facility opened in the Fall they have already begun to solidify community relationships, connecting with Veteran organizations, and attending events to meet community members. They have established a great group of volunteers who have helped them to get the site up and running.

The Washington team  welcomed the very first two dogs to their site, Ericson and puppy Patrick. They are preparing to host an Open House in 2023 and plan to continue to establish their site’s roots.

We would like to extend a massive thank you to all of our incredible supporters for making 2022 such a big year for PPH. Without each and every one of you, the immense growth and success we are celebrating from this last year would not have been possible. Each of you have directly contributed to our growth and have allowed us to continue to do what we love – helping Warriors.

Here’s to 2022! We can not wait to see what 2023 has in store.
